My interest in mental health developed when I began working with older adults who were living with Dementia and young children with Autism. I became interested in how individual behaviour could tell us what each person needed.
I initially started studying Psychology in Canberra before my life took me on an adventure around Australia, including living in Far North Queensland and eventually ending up in Darwin.
I finished my Bachelor of Science with Honours and began working on homelessness prevention programs in Darwin and the greater Palmerston area. This gave me the opportunity to work with people living with mental illness and also their families. I was able to see firsthand how mental illness and caring for someone with a mental illness can impact a family and take its toll on resilience. During this time I spent a year at Menzies School of Health Research learning about research and studying indigenous mental health interventions. I was then fortunate to be accepted into the first year of the Masters of Psychology (Clinical) program at Charles Darwin University.
During Masters, I undertook specialist training in the diagnosis and treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorder across the lifespan. I also developed a passion for working with children and adults living with the consequences of trauma. This included working with people struggling with drugs and alcohol.
My first job out of Masters was as the on-staff psychologist at a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility I began my two-year Clinical Registrar Program working across two private practices in Darwin, one being with the new Perth Psychological Service based in Darwin, or PPS Darwin as we say to reduce confusion about the location. I completed the Registrar program in March 2018.
Here I work with children and adults on a range of issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, grief, parent-child relationships, LGBTQI concerns and ASD diagnosis. My passion still lies in treating people as individuals. I draw from the many evidence-based therapies including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (TF-CBT), CBT, Solution focussed therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Filial Therapy, and motivational interviewing techniques to be able to address your individual needs.
I will work with you to establish your goals from therapy and to then work towards achieving them. I aim to create a safe, non-judgemental environment where you can feel comfortable to explore what is stopping you living your best life.
I look forward to working with you at Perth Psychological Services; I’m available at our Darwin clinic.
